Demo Overview

Taiko Beats 5x3 reels with a gold mallet, red fan, kendama, and dango skewers between a beckoning cat and a stern daruma
A beckoning cat and a stern daruma flank the reels, where the gold mallet, 16x for five, crowns reel 5 and a red fan, a kendama, and two dango skewers fill the reels to its left

Gold capitals spell out Taiko Beats over a swirl of red ribbon, with small drums tucked into the knot, and the slot underneath keeps to that red-and-gold lacquer all the way round. The symbols look like they came off a festival stall. There’s a pink, white, and green dango skewer, a kendama with its red-and-white ball, a spotted red fan, and a gold mallet trailing a red tassel. The royals glow in gold, red, green, and purple brush strokes. All of that dresses a free games round with one stubborn Wild at its centre.

Two figures guard the frame. On the left, an orange-red beckoning cat smiles with one paw up; on the right, a red daruma stares back with thick black brows and a stern face. Big red-and-cream drums with swirling heads fill the lower corners, and the Scatter is a drum as well, a red studded one on a shrine stand with a small torii gate in front. Taiko drums give the game its name, and the art keeps coming back to them.

Features and Free Play

Drum Wild Ladder

A purple tile with a cream drum head and gold WILD lettering, the Wild lands on reels 1, 3, and 5. During the free games, it becomes a ladder. A Wild that lands in a win holds its place into the next free game, and when that game starts, it changes into an x2 Wild. An x2 that stays changes into an x3 Wild at the start of the game after, and x3 is the top step. The game removes any Wild that misses a win, so a climb lasts exactly as long as the Wild keeps landing in wins. If an x2 and an x3 Wild share a way, the win takes the higher multiplier, x3, rather than both. In Lucky Sakura, an x2 multiplier doubles the wins in its free spins; here, a Wild reaches x2 by winning once and staying into the next game, and x3 needs another win on top of that. Each free game is a test for every Wild already on the board, and you’ll catch yourself checking reels 1, 3, and 5 before anything else when a game ends, because those three columns decide whether the next one starts with a multiplier or with nothing held.

Scatter Count

Taiko Beats reels with three dango skewers boxed in gold across reels 1 to 3 and a red drum Scatter on reel 2
Gold boxes trace three dango down reels 1 to 3, a 0.36x way, with the drum Scatter just below the middle skewer on reel 2

That red studded drum on its shrine stand is the Scatter, and how many you land decides how long the round runs. Three anywhere award 8 free games, four award 18, and five award 28. Scatters pay as well, 100x the total wager for five and 1x for three, and because they only appear in the main game, none appear after the round has begun. Eight games leave a Wild little room to climb from plain to x3, while 28 give the Wilds on reels 1, 3, and 5 far more chances to land, win, and step up. Each free game keeps the stake of the triggering spin. Habanero rates the game’s best result at 4,005x.

Last-Game Extension

If a new Wild lands in a win on the last free game, 2 additional free games are added. That Wild has won, so it remains in place for the following spin as well, and the round picks up again with it held. A five-Scatter round can therefore run past its 28 games, and a three-Scatter round past its 8, as long as that last game produces a new Wild in a win. It’s a small rule, but it turns the final free game into the one you watch hardest.

How to Play

Odd-Reel Wilds

Wilds on reels 1, 3, and 5 shape how Taiko Beats pays, so start there. The Wild covers for anything but the Scatter, so it can fill the opening, middle, or closing position of a way, while reels 2 and 4 have to supply the real symbol. A three-symbol win needs a matching symbol on reel 2, and a four- or five-symbol win needs one on reel 4 too.

The rest of a round is simple. Taiko Beats pays across 243 ways, fixed at 25 coins, so you don’t pick lines or a ways count. Wins come from matching symbols on neighbouring reels, at least three of them, counted from the leftmost reel onward. Each way pays its longest combination only, and the game adds separate combinations on one spin together.

Landing three or more drum Scatters anywhere starts the round, which is where the Wilds change behaviour. A Wild in a win stays on its reel for the next free game and upgrades as each game starts, so the same three reels that limit the main game become the reels you’re watching once the round begins.

Slot RTP

The return Habanero set for Taiko Beats is 96.66%. It’s a long-run figure, and on a game whose Wild multipliers belong to the free games, a short stretch of free play can land well above or below it.

Demo Paytable

The gold mallet heads the four high symbols at 16x for five, ahead of the spotted fan, the kendama, and the dango skewer, and the brush-letter royals step down from A to J beneath them, with the J paying 0.08x for three and 1.2x for five. The Scatter’s row is the one that pays anywhere instead of along a way. The table counts in total-bet multiples, with columns for 3, 4, and 5 symbols on a way. The taiko drums on the frame and on the Scatter are also why Taiko Beats is listed alongside the other music slots.

Symbol 3 4 5
Gold mallet 0.6x 6x 16x
Red fan 0.48x 4x 7x
Kendama 0.4x 3x 6x
Dango 0.36x 2.4x 4x
A 0.28x 1.6x 3.2x
K 0.2x 1x 2.4x
Q 0.12x 0.6x 1.6x
J 0.08x 0.4x 1.2x
Drum Scatter (pays anywhere) 1x 5x 100x
Wild (reels 1, 3, and 5) No pay of its own; covers for anything but the Scatter

Ultimate Slots Verdict

A 16x top way pay leaves Taiko Beats leaning on one feature, and that feature waits behind three or more drum Scatters.

When it arrives, the ladder is good. Wilds in a win stay, change to x2 and then x3 as each free game begins, and disappear when they miss, so every free game has something riding on the last. Wilds land on reels 1, 3, and 5 alone, which limits how much the ladder can build. It's a sharp idea on a modest table, and the table is what keeps it at 3.5.

Hits What we like

  • A Wild that lands in a win holds its spot for the next free game.
  • Staying Wilds step up to x2, then x3, as each new free game begins.
  • Scatters landing anywhere start 8, 18, or 28 free games for three, four, or five.
  • A new Wild in a win on the last free game adds 2 more games.
  • Scatters pay up to 100x the total bet wherever they land.

Misses What could be better

  • Five gold mallets pay 16x, the top way pay before any Wild multiplier.
  • The Wilds share just three reels, 1, 3, and 5.

Detailed Review

Our Review of Habanero’s Taiko Beats

The drum Wild ladder is the reason to give Taiko Beats your time. A Wild that wins stays, becomes an x2 when the next free game starts, and reaches x3 if it wins again, while the game removes a Wild that misses. That gives every free game a stake in the one before it, and you can see at a glance what each Wild on the board needs to do next. Even a plain Wild landing in a win on reel 1 early in the round matters, because if it keeps winning, it’s the one that ends up at x3. It’s a readable feature, and it makes the free games feel like a run you’re building rather than a string of separate spins.

The reel spread is the pinch. Habanero launched the game in September 2022 as a Japanese-themed ways slot with Wilds on reels 1, 3, and 5. That leaves the ladder three columns at most. Any win still needs a regular symbol on reel 2, and on reel 4 for anything longer than three. A held x3 on reel 5 adds nothing to a three-symbol win that stops at reel 3, and unless another way runs through it, the game takes it off the reels. That’s the choice holding the game back.

The paytable gives the ladder little to multiply. Five gold mallets pay 16x before any Wild gets involved, the red fan 7x, and the royals 3.2x or less for five. Habanero grades the volatility Very High, and with a table this compact, that grading reads as a bet on the free games. The case for the game is still real. Five Scatters start 28 free games, plenty of runway for Wilds to land and climb, and a new Wild in a win on the last game adds 2 more.

Its limitation is plain. What this game does differently happens within the bonus round, and the main game around them is a plain ways slot with a modest table. The ladder cuts both ways too. The game removes a held Wild the moment a game passes without it in a win, and seeing a Wild that had reached x3 vanish from reel 5 stings. Taiko Beats asks you to accept that trade, one sharp feature for a short paytable, and it doesn’t hide it.
