Dead Canary Demo

The Canary Has to Die to Pay

When was the last time a slot made you stop and read the rules before your first spin? Dead Canary is that kind of game. Nolimit City built it on a diamond-shaped grid tilted at 45 degrees, where symbols slide in at an angle instead of dropping vertically, three rows start blocked behind barriers, and the main bonus feature won’t hand over collected multiplier values unless the canary holding them actually dies. It’s a mining slot about an angry dwarf, a handful of expendable canaries, and enough interconnected systems that your first few spins will mostly be spent figuring out what just happened.

The Mining Feature Set

The Grid and How It Opens

Dead Canary uses a diamond-shaped six-reel layout that begins in a 3-3-2-2-1-1 formation, giving 36 ways to win. Three rows are sealed behind metal barriers at the start. Winning combinations, xBomb detonations next to a barrier, or the Wild Mining feature can unlock those positions, expanding the grid to a 3-4-3-4-3-4 shape and up to 1728 ways. Symbols do not fall straight down. They slide in from the right at an angle, row by row, which takes a little adjustment but fits the tilted layout well.

This grid has one bottom multiplier already unlocked at x2 and two more waiting behind barriers.

xBomb Wilds

xBomb Wilds substitute for everything except bonus symbols. When one forms part of a win, it detonates, removing all adjacent symbols and increasing the win multiplier by 1 for the next cascade. Multiple xBombs in a single chain push the multiplier further. During our session with the Nolimit Booster active, multipliers of 5x or higher became a regular sight.

Wild Mining

If three, four, or five of the same paying symbol line up diagonally without forming a standard winning combination, the Wild Mining feature triggers. Those symbols are removed and replaced by one, two, or three xBomb Wilds in the middle positions. It’s an alternative path to wilds that fires more often than you’d expect, particularly on the larger grid states.

Canary Free Spins

Landing three or more canary scatter symbols triggers Canary Free Spins, starting with three spins. Every xBomb that detonates during the feature resets the spin count back to three, keeping the round alive as long as xBombs keep appearing.

Canaries in cages land on the grid during the round, each carrying hit points (shown as hearts) and a multiplier that starts low. The dwarf miner can also appear during the round as an additional collector. Each time a canary or the dwarf is involved in a winning combination, its multiplier climbs. When a canary or dwarf loses all its hit points and dies, the accumulated multiplier value is collected and added to the payout.

If a canary or dwarf survives the round with hit points still intact, its entire multiplier is lost.

Two types of canary scatter exist: silver cage canaries collect coins and multipliers in an x-shape one position from themselves, while gold cage canaries collect across entire rows in the same pattern, covering far more ground.

Nolimit Booster (xBet)

Activating the Nolimit Booster adds 40% to each spin’s cost. In return, it guarantees a scatter symbol landing on each spin and unlocks the first barrier position immediately. During our session, this noticeably increased how often features triggered and how frequently xBombs appeared on the grid.

Nolimit Bonus

Three buy-in options are available: standard Canary Free Spins at 68x the base bet, Golden Canary Free Spins at 500x with at least one gold cage scatter among the starting canaries, and a Lucky Draw variant at 284x.

How to Play

A Diamond Grid That Slides, Not Spins

Wins form when three or more matching symbols land on consecutive reels, reading left to right. On this diamond-shaped grid, ‘left to right’ runs along the angled axes instead of straight across. Symbols arrive at an angle, sliding in from the upper right, which feels unusual for the first few spins but becomes readable quickly.

Three rows are locked behind barriers at the start of each round, with unlocks coming through wins, xBomb detonations, or Wild Mining triggers. There are no traditional wild symbols outside of the xBombs, and the canary serves as both scatter and the key to the Free Spins trigger.

Paytable

Values below are from the paytable at a $1.00 bet. Wins require three or more matching symbols on consecutive reels, left to right. All values scale with bet size.

RTP, Volatility, and Limits

Bets range from 0.20 to 100.00. The Nolimit Booster adds 40% to each spin’s cost, increasing a 1.00 base bet to 1.40, and guarantees a scatter symbol on every spin while unlocking the first barrier position immediately. With the Booster active, the maximum base bet is capped at 5.00.

The default RTP is 96.02%, which rises to 96.33% when the Booster is active. Operator-dependent settings of 94.12% and 92.11% are also available. Nolimit City rates this slot’s volatility at 10 out of 10, making it one of their most volatile titles. The maximum win is 65,000x the bet.

Ultimate Slots Verdict

Dead Canary doesn't ease you in. It drops you into a diamond-shaped mineshaft with barriers, xBombs, diagonal wild triggers, canary hit points, and a payout rule that says your collected multipliers only count if the bird dies. Most players will spend their first few rounds working out what's going on instead of following the action. But once it clicks, there's more depth here than in most Nolimit City releases, and that's a high bar. A 4 feels right for a slot that asks more of you and rewards the investment.

✓ What We Like

  • xBomb Wilds that detonate, clear adjacent symbols, and push the win multiplier higher with each chain create genuine cascade momentum
  • Wild Mining adds an unexpected second path to wilds through diagonal symbol alignment, firing more often than anticipated
  • Canary Free Spins reset their counter every time an xBomb detonates, keeping the round alive as long as the grid stays active
  • Nolimit Booster at 40% extra noticeably increased feature frequency and multiplier reach during our session, with the RTP bump to 96.33% making it feel worth the cost

✗ What Could Be Better

  • Collected multiplier values are only awarded when a canary or dwarf loses all hit points and dies, meaning massive builds like our 531x dwarf can be lost entirely if the character survives
  • Complexity is steep on first contact, with the diamond grid, barrier system, Wild Mining, and canary hit points all running simultaneously
  • Regular play without the Nolimit Booster produced modest returns and infrequent feature triggers, with most sessions cycling through small wins and occasional barrier unlocks

Detailed Review

Dense, Dark, and Worth the Learning Curve

Something about Dead Canary’s soundtrack stuck with us long after closing the game. Eerie and faintly pirate-like, it loops a set of catchy phrases that sit somewhere between foreboding and playful. Paired with the dark mine setting, stone walls, chain-link details, and golden treasure glowing at the base of the screen, the atmosphere landed exactly where Nolimit City intended it to.

Early spins without the Nolimit Booster ran in familiar cycles. Small wins of 0.10 to 5.00 at a 1.00 stake. Barriers opened occasionally, usually one row at a time, and xBombs pushed multipliers to 2x or 3x before the chain broke. Nothing triggered the free spins, and the balance drifted downward slowly enough that the pacing felt manageable rather than punishing.

Switching on the Nolimit Booster changed the rhythm. At 1.40 per spin, every round arrived with a guaranteed scatter and an immediate barrier unlock, which meant more positions in play from the first cascade. xBombs appeared more frequently, and multipliers of 5x or higher became common within regular cascading sequences. Canary scatters began landing in clusters, and the first set of Canary Free Spins triggered shortly after.

Our Canary Free Spins round started with two canaries and the dwarf on the grid, each carrying hit points and a starting multiplier. Across twelve spins, the dwarf’s multiplier climbed steadily, reaching 42x before losing its last hit point and converting into a collectable skull. Two canaries also died during the round, adding 4x and 2x. One canary survived with a 2x value that went uncollected. Final payout: 50x the base bet.

Later, we bought a Golden Canary round at 500x the bet. It started with three canaries, one golden, and the dwarf landed a few spins in. By mid-round the dwarf’s multiplier had climbed past 161x, then 342x, then 436x, eventually reaching 531x. Two canaries died along the way, collecting 90x and 36x. But the dwarf survived the round with all 531x still attached, and none of it was paid out. A third collection added 14x, bringing the total to 140x from a 500x buy-in. A 531x multiplier, built across eleven spins, gone because the dwarf had one hit point left. Few slots punish a strong round quite like that.

Dead Canary Golden Canary free spins closing spin

The dwarf reached 531x and survived the round with one hit point left, which meant the multiplier never converted.

Both rounds showed why Dead Canary lands differently from most Nolimit City games. First sessions will be spent learning, not winning. By the second or third bought round, the systems start to make sense, and the moments where xBombs chain into barrier unlocks into multiplier builds feel deliberate instead of chaotic. Few slots demand this much attention, and fewer still make the demand feel worthwhile. As a free play demo, it’s one of the more absorbing in Nolimit City’s library.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each canary and dwarf that lands during Free Spins carries hit points and a multiplier that starts low and increases with every winning combination the character is part of. Collected values are only paid out when the character loses all hit points and dies. If a character survives the round, its accumulated multiplier is lost.
In Dead Canary, the Nolimit Booster adds 40% to each spin's cost and guarantees a scatter symbol landing plus an immediate barrier unlock on every spin. It also increases the RTP from 96.02% to 96.33% and raises the frequency of feature triggers.
Dead Canary uses a diamond-shaped grid rotated 45 degrees, so symbols arrive from the upper right along the grid's natural axis instead of falling vertically. It takes a few spins to adjust to visually, but the win mechanics work the same way as standard left-to-right reel evaluation.
xBombs are wild symbols in Dead Canary that substitute for all regular symbols. When part of a win, they detonate and remove all adjacent symbols, clearing space for new cascades. Each detonation also increases the round's win multiplier by 1.
Yes. During Canary Free Spins in Dead Canary, every xBomb detonation resets the remaining spin count back to three. As long as xBombs keep landing and detonating, the feature continues, which is how rounds can extend well beyond the initial three spins.
