About Game

Mustang Gold Megaways Demo Overview

The white horse, the dark horse, the cowboy, and the cowgirl are the same four premiums Pragmatic Play drew for Mustang Gold in 2019, and the four horseshoe jackpots beside the reels carry the same values they always did.

The 2024 Megaways build keeps every bit of that and then rewrites the one rule that decides whether you ever reach free spins. Campfire scatters count for nothing by themselves. A silver COLLECT star has to arrive alongside them, collect them, and turn each campfire into the spins it reveals. Three campfires and no star is a blank in this slot, however good the screen looks.

Free Play Features

The Collect Star

Wins pay, the winning symbols clear, and fresh ones drop in from above until nothing more connects. Horseshoe money symbols and campfire scatters ignore all of that. They stay where they landed until the tumbling stops, and neither of them is worth anything until a COLLECT star appears. When one does, it resolves after the last tumble, taking the cash value of every money symbol on the grid and the free spins in every campfire together. The money symbols run 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 8x, 10x, or 15x the bet. Four fixed jackpot horseshoes join them at Mini 20x, Minor 50x, Major 100x, and Grand 2,500x.

Golden Collect

Within free spins, a gold version of the star can appear on any reel. It collects the same way, and then it moves down the grid. If the GOLDEN COLLECT is above the bottom row, the grid respins and drops it one position, and the respins keep coming until it falls off the bottom. Every drop is another collection, so one gold star can collect several sets of money symbols before it leaves. Campfires that arrive with a star, gold or silver, add their spins again for each star showing.

The Wheel Before the Round

Before free spins begin, the game offers a wheel. Take it, and one option adds 3 spins while the other adds 5. Five gambles are allowed in total, and a win moves you up the ladder until the total can reach 100 spins. A loss takes the round away entirely. Above all, the rules put a hard stop on the result. A win is “limited to 5,000x bet”.

The Price of a Shortcut

Two stake-side options exist for players who would rather not wait for a star. The Ante Bet costs 1.5x your stake, doubles the natural chance of the round, and puts more campfires on the reels. It also disables the Buy while it is switched on. Buy Free Spins costs 120x and guarantees a minimum of 3 spins, which is the shortest round the game can hand you.

How to Play

The Independent Top Row

Reels 1 and 6 can show up to 7 symbols each. Reels 2 to 5 show up to 6, plus one more position on a top row that spins right to left on its own, and that extra strip is how this Megaways build reaches 117,649 ways. The MEGAWAYS counter above the reels changes every spin as the reel heights change, so the same stake buys a different board each time. On a phone or tablet, the reels are the tap target. A tap stops them early, and holding the spin button gives you turbo speed.

Stacked Scatters, No Trigger

Mustang Gold Megaways grid with three stacked campfire scatters on reel 2 and no win
The grid looks unconventional, but when you understand what Megaways is about, it all starts clicking into place!

Because money symbols and campfires survive the tumbles, a star that lands late in a sequence still collects everything on the grid. The reverse matters more. A reel can fill with campfires and pay nothing, and no amount of them changes the odds of the next spin. There is no counter moving towards a trigger here, so a screen that looks close to a round is often not close to anything. Free spins run on their own reel set, and that set is the only place the gold star appears.

RTP

Pragmatic Play’s own screens carry a LOW VOLATILITY badge on this game, which is the oddest thing about it.

Ultimate Slots Verdict

A faithful port with one change under the paint. Free spins need a collect star rather than a count of campfires, and that makes the round rarer and harder to see coming. The wheel that follows is the best idea here.

3.5/5 Very Good

✓ What We Like

  • The COLLECT star takes money values and free spins in one action, so a single symbol can settle a whole tumble sequence
  • Money symbols and campfires stay put through the tumbles, giving a late star plenty to pick up
  • GOLDEN COLLECT respins move the symbol down the grid and collect again at every position
  • The pre-round wheel shows the odds for each step, so the risk is visible before you take it
  • The 2019 art carries over intact and suits the wider Megaways frame
  • Four fixed jackpot horseshoes appear alongside the ordinary money symbols instead of appearing only inside a separate feature

✗ What Could Be Better

  • No scatter count means no near-miss you can read, and 2 campfires are worth exactly what 3 are without a star
  • The buy guarantees only the shortest possible round for a price well above the studio's usual
  • A losing gamble wheel can wipe out a round you have just paid for

Detailed Review

Reviewing Pragmatic Play’s Mustang Gold Megaways

Set this against the 2019 Mustang Gold, and the gap comes down to one symbol. In the original, campfires did the work on their own, and a count of them started the round. Here they are inert until a star finds them, and the star arrives at random. That is the port’s real design decision, and everything else about how the game feels follows from it.

The art has aged well. Prairie sunset, a purple sky, two horses over a carved wooden frame, and a cowboy who tips his hat from the middle of the grid. Pragmatic Play repainted nothing for the Megaways version and did not need to, and this is still one of the better-looking Wild West sets the studio has put out. The frame is wider and busier.

A trigger with no counter behind it shapes how this game behaves. You cannot watch two campfires and know you are close, because a third campfire is not what you are missing. You need a star, and a star can land on an otherwise dead board. Long stretches with no rounds are the price of that, and a 96.46% RTP spread across many small tumbles, and a few rounds that arrive unannounced, is not the profile the front of the game advertises.

The buy guarantees 3 spins and nothing beyond them, so the wheel is the more interesting purchase of the two. A round of 3 can become 100 before it starts, and the game shows the odds for each step under the wheel as you go. A losing wheel takes the lot. That is a real decision rather than a formality, and free play is where you can watch it resolve a dozen times without a stake behind it.

This is a port that kept its looks and made its round harder to see coming. The horseshoes, the jackpot plaques, and the pair of horses all survived the rebuild intact, and the wider frame flatters them. What didn’t survive was the comfort of watching a third campfire drop and knowing what it meant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Campfires do nothing on their own here. A COLLECT star has to be on the grid with them, and it converts each campfire into the spins it reveals once the tumbles finish. Without a star, any number of them pays nothing and starts nothing.
It respins. The gold version appears during free spins only, and after collecting it drops one position and the grid respins, repeating until it leaves through the bottom row. Each drop collects again, so one gold star can clear several sets of money symbols.
The round goes with it. The wheel also takes every spin already won, and play returns to standard spins. The odds for the step you are on appear under the wheel, so you can stop and take the spins you have at any point.
No. Switching the Ante Bet on disables Buy Free Spins in Mustang Gold Megaways, so the two are alternatives rather than a stack. The ante doubles the natural chance of a round and adds campfires to the reels instead.
The LOW badge on the splash is not how the game behaves. Free spins depend on a collect star arriving rather than on a count of scatters, so the dry stretches run long and land nowhere near a low-volatility rhythm. The site's volatility rating here is High.
