Quick Take: Irish High Volatility

Thirty spins. Not a single hit. That was the opening stretch with 4 Pots Riches: Hold and Win during our demo session, and it tells you almost everything you need to know about this slot before you load it. Playson’s Irish Hold and Win entry is built for one thing, the bonus round, and the standard reels exist mainly to deliver you there.

When the bonus game eventually fired after spin 35, the Irish charm was all over it: a leprechaun Wild, pots of gold sitting above the reels, and a Hold and Win respin sequence that can escalate into a 5×5 Super Pot Bonus with a 10,000x Super Jackpot at the top. Get there, and it pays. Getting there is the challenge, and it’s not for the faint-hearted!

What’s Inside

Hold and Win Bonus Game

The core bonus round launches when Clover Bonus symbols land in the main game and one of the four Pots above the reels activates. Three re-spins are awarded at the start. Every new Bonus symbol that lands resets the count back to 3. The round continues until re-spins run out or all cells are filled. When it ends, the values of all Bonus symbols on the grid are totalled and paid out. Symbol values range from 1x to 12x your bet per coin.

The four pots sit above the reels and collect Clover Bonus Symbols by colour. Which pots activate determines which Pot Features are in play, and combinations of features can appear together within a single Bonus Game.

Multi Feature (Violet Pot)

Each violet Clover Bonus that lands during the Bonus Game distributes multipliers of x2, x3, and x5 across three empty cells on the grid. If no empty unmultiplied cells remain, multipliers stack on existing ones and their values add up. After distributing multipliers, the violet symbol itself takes a random value of 2x to 10x your bet. All multipliers are applied to Bonus and Jackpot symbol values at the end of the round, before collection.

Collect Feature (Blue Pot)

Each blue Clover Bonus in the Bonus Game sweeps up the values of all other symbols currently on the reels and adds them to its own value. Multipliers are applied to Bonus and Jackpot values before the Collect calculation runs.

Mystery Feature (Red Pot)

Each red Clover Bonus awards one of the following at random. Options are the Mini Jackpot (15x), Minor Jackpot (30x), Major Jackpot (100x), or a high random cash value of 20x, 25x, 40x, 50x, or 75x your total bet.

Golden Pot

A Golden Pot can appear during the Bonus Game and randomly transforms into a violet, red, or blue Clover Bonus. It either activates an additional pot feature or strengthens the one already running, adding an extra Clover Bonus to the grid in the process.

Super Pot Bonus Game

The Super Clover Bonus Symbol is the rarer trigger. It lands only during the main game and, when it does, gives a chance to launch the Super Pot Bonus Game. The reels expand from 5×3 to 5×5 by adding one empty row above and one below, creating a 25-cell field. The Super Pot Bonus starts with existing Bonus and Clover Bonus symbols pre-populated and comes with one or more random Pot Features (Multi, Mystery, or Collect, or a combination). Fill all 25 cells and you win the Super Jackpot of 10,000x your bet. Fill 15 cells (the 5×3 Grand Section) and you win the Grand Jackpot of 3,000x. The Super Clover Bonus itself receives a random value of 7x, 8x, 9x, or 10x during the round.

Bonus Game Jackpots

Four fixed jackpots are available inside the Bonus Game. Mini (15x), Minor (30x), and Major (100x) can appear randomly at any point during either bonus round. Grand (3,000x) requires filling 15 cells in the standard Bonus Game or the Grand Section in Super Pot mode. Super (10,000x) requires filling all 25 cells in the Super Pot Bonus Game only. Note that if all 25 cells are filled, only the Super Jackpot value is paid; individual symbol values are not added to it.

Bonus Buy

Two purchase options are available. A random Bonus Game with 1, 2, or 3 Pot Features costs 70x your bet. A random Super Pot Bonus Game with 1, 2, or 3 Pot Features costs 150x. Both are unavailable in the UK.

Wild

The Leprechaun Wild substitutes for all symbols except Bonus, Clover Bonus, and Jackpot symbols. It lands only on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5, and can appear stacked.

How to Play

Playing 4 Pots Riches Demo

Standard wins here require matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost position, starting from three-of-a-kind. That is the conventional part of this slot. The paylines follow a traditional left-to-right format with 25 fixed lines. What makes the game unusual is how little those paylines matter. Paytable wins from regular combinations are modest, the hit rate is low, and the Wild on reels 2–5 only gets you so far. The real game starts when the Clover Bonus symbols land and a pot activates.

Bets run from €0.20 to €50.00 per spin. With high volatility and an RTP of 95.7% (shown in the info screen), this is a game that needs enough bankroll to survive dry spells (in our session, that meant 30+ consecutive empty spins before the first win landed). The Bonus Buy is available in most regions at 70x for the standard game or 150x for the Super Pot version; UK players will need to trigger organically.

Slot Paytable

Values at a £1.00 total bet. The card symbols (A, K, Q, J) share a single pay tier.

Symbol 3x 4x 5x
Horseshoe 0.60 3.00 10.00
Harp 0.50 2.00 8.00
Beer Mug 0.40 1.50 6.00
Money Bag 0.30 1.00 4.00
A / K / Q / J 0.20 0.40 2.00

Those figures reflect a £1 stake. Even a five-of-a-kind Horseshoe win returns 10x, meaningful context when you consider the Bonus Game entry threshold. The bonus symbols themselves carry values of 1x–12x per coin, and the jackpot tiers (15x, 30x, 100x, 3,000x, 10,000x) are what this game is genuinely built around.

Ultimate Slots Verdict

4 Pots Riches is a high-volatility Hold and Win slot that delivers almost nothing outside its bonus rounds and a great deal once you get there. The 95.7% RTP and the sparseness of standard play hits mean you need both patience and bankroll to reach the feature. When you do, the three Pot Features and the Super Pot escalation give it real depth.

✓ What We Like

  • Players who are comfortable with long gaps between meaningful hits and who specifically enjoy the Hold and Win respin format.
  • The multi-layer Pot Features add genuine variety over a simpler Hold and Win game, and the Super Pot Bonus with its 5×5 grid expansion is the kind of escalation that fans of the format will find worthwhile.
  • The 70x and 150x bonus buy options also make it accessible for players who prefer to skip the grind. Fans of the 3 Pots Riches series will find this a logical step up with more pot combinations and a new top-tier bonus mode.

✗ What Could Be Better

  • Anyone who needs regular interaction with the game between features.
  • Thirty consecutive empty spins is not an aberration here — it's the profile.
  • The base symbol pays are so modest that even a run of small hits won't compensate for a long dry spell.
  • If you want a Hold and Win slot with more breathing room between bonus triggers, Golden Penny x1000 from the same provider offers a broadly similar framework with a different frequency feel and the addition of a multiplier trail mechanic that keeps the standard game more active between bonus rounds.

Detailed Review

Session Play Notes

The opening 30 spins in our demo produced nothing at all, which is striking even for a high-volatility Hold and Win title. Spin 35 broke the drought at 1.2x. Eventually the Super Bonus Game triggered and partially recovered the session, leaving 7 credits up after a significant deficit. That arc captures what this game is: long patience tests punctuated by payouts that can make the wait worthwhile, or occasionally just break even on. The honesty of that experience is worth noting in a free play context.

The visual execution is polished. Playson’s Irish theme is well-trodden territory at this point. The same harps, horseshoes, beer mugs and green backdrop appear in the 3 Pots series and across several competitor titles, but the production quality here is sharp and the pot animations during the bonus rounds give good visual feedback as the feature builds. The audio reuses cues from earlier Playson releases, which is noticeable if you’ve played those games.

Where 4 Pots Riches earns its place is in the Bonus Game structure itself. Three layered Pot Features, the ability for combinations to run simultaneously, the Golden Pot wildcard and the Super Clover escalation path all mean no two bonus rounds play out identically. That variety, and the genuine tension of watching the respin counter reset on each new symbol, is what Hold and Win players are here for. Everything else is just the price of entry.

The Pots Riches Series

4 Pots Riches is the third entry in Playson’s Irish Hold and Win slot line, and each release has moved the format in a distinct direction.

  • 3 Pots Riches: Hold and Win (the original): five reels, three rows, 25 paylines, RTP 95.76%, medium-high volatility. Three pot types (Double, Collect, Mystery) and free spins triggered by the scatter pot. Max win around 5,000x. It is the most approachable of the three, with free spins providing a secondary route to wins outside the Hold and Win round.
  • 3 Pots Riches Extra: Hold and Win (the first sequel): grid expands to 5×4 with 30 paylines, same 95.76% RTP, free spins still present. Introduced the Golden Pot feature (a wildcard that can activate or enhance any pot type mid-round), which carries forward into 4 Pots Riches. Max win remains around 5,000x.
  • 4 Pots Riches: Hold and Win (this release): back to 5×3 with 25 paylines, RTP at 95.7%, high volatility, and free spins gone entirely. The trade-off is a significantly higher top end. Max win is 15,000x, the new Super Pot Bonus Game plays on a 5×5 expanded grid, and a Super Jackpot of 10,000x is available for filling all 25 cells. The Pot Features are renamed (Multi replaces Double) and the multiplier distribution system is new. This is the most volatile and most feature-complex of the three, and the one that asks the most of your bankroll before it delivers.

Frequently Asked Questions

The standard Bonus Game uses the normal 5×3 grid with up to 15 cells. The Super Pot Bonus Game expands the reels to 5×5, creating a 25-cell playing field. The Super Pot version is triggered by the Super Clover Bonus Symbol in the main game, starts with symbols pre-populated from the trigger spin, and adds the Super Jackpot of 10,000x as a top prize for filling all 25 cells. The Grand Jackpot of 3,000x is also reachable in both versions.
Each Pot collects Clover Bonus Symbols of its own colour, so multiple features can run simultaneously within the same round. If a violet, blue, and red Clover Bonus all land, the Multi, Collect, and Mystery Features are all active. The sequence matters in combination runs. Multipliers from the Multi Feature are applied to Bonus and Jackpot values at the end of the round before the Collect Feature gathers those values. The combination is determined by which pots were activated during the trigger spin.
The Golden Pot is a wildcard that only appears during the Bonus Game. Rather than belonging to a fixed pot type, it randomly transforms into a violet, red, or blue Clover Bonus on landing. This either activates a new pot feature that wasn't already running, or adds an extra Clover Bonus coin to one that is, boosting the feature's effect mid-round.
The Bonus Game ends when the re-spin counter reaches zero without a new symbol landing. Each new Bonus symbol resets the count back to 3, so the round can continue indefinitely as long as symbols keep arriving. If three consecutive re-spins produce nothing new, the round closes and the total of all collected symbols is paid, regardless of how many empty cells remain.
