Demo Overview

Jingle Balls splash card with a cigar-smoking Santa and the 12,250x maximum
Santa raises a brandy glass on the Time for vacation in… card, which shows the 12,250x maximum in gold.

Open the Jingle Balls demo next to Remember Gulag, and you’d swear someone hung garland over the same slot. It’s the 6-reel board from April 2022, symbol for symbol and pay for pay, with a cigar-chewing Santa in the moustached officer’s old spot. What Nolimit City’s 2023 Christmas release really changed is the maths behind the top prize, which dropped from 30,000x and got far easier to reach. You’re looking at a familiar game tuned for a different kind of chase.

Slot Features

Four Wilds From One Nudge

The xNudge Wild lands stacked on reel 3 or 4 in both base play and Spirit Spins, and always slides until the whole column shows. Each step lifts its multiplier by one. Once it’s fully in view, the stack breaks into 4 Wilds, and two of them on screen add their multipliers together. If an xSplit Wild hits one, that reel gets an extra Wild.

xSplit Wilds and the Star

xSplit Wilds work reels 5 and 6 during regular spins, then shift to reels 1 and 2 once Spirit Spins begin. When one lands, it cuts the symbols either side of it in two and doubles them, then becomes two ordinary Wilds that another xSplit can split again. The odd case is a Star Scatter. Split one outside the bonus, and it becomes a Wild that expands to fill its reel, with no multiplier attached. Once Spirit Spins trigger, Scatters don’t split.

A Star on Reel 2 for 1.5x

Wish Upon A Star is the xBet here. Pay 1.5x the bet, and a Star Scatter lands on reel 2 while reel 5 is already unlocked, so you start two Stars short of the bonus. Symbol pays don’t change, it doesn’t apply in bonus modes, and the return rises to 96.22%.

Spirit Spins

Santa’s Setup Spin

Three Stars start Spirit Spins, but a setup spin comes first. It decides how many spins you get and the multiplier each of the four highest-paying characters gets, then picks one of them at random to be active. Every extra Star you collect adds a spin, and three collected during the bonus move you up to All Aboard.

All Aboard and Double Joy

Four Stars open All Aboard, with all four characters active from the start. Five open Double Joy, which doubles the multiplier values in the setup spin and through the bonus.

Multipliers on the Top Reel

A reel above the grid can hand an active character +1x, +2x, or a doubled multiplier, and in Double Joy, the options become +2x, +4x, or double. Whatever it adds is kept until the bonus finishes. Santa’s biggest card, Time for Vacation in…, is worth 12,250x.

How to Play

xWays on Reels 1 and 2

Jingle Balls reels with an x3 xWays elf on reel 2, a Wild on reel 1 and reels 5 and 6 locked under garland
A 2-row xWays elf with x3 on reel 2 and a Wild on reel 1 pay 1.35x across 3 ways as the counter reads 240 ways, with reels 5 and 6 still under garland.

The xWays symbol drives most of the main game. It lands on the first two reels (reels 5 and 6 in Spirit Spins), reveals a random regular symbol, grows to 2 rows, and takes x2 or x3, which counts as that many copies of the symbol. Two on screen always show the same symbol, and every xSplit that hits one doubles its multiplier. A symbol wins once it shows on reel 1 and each reel after it without a gap, paying its table value times the ways it makes. You’ll find xWays, xSplit, and xBet working together in San Quentin 2: Death Row as well.

Reels 5 and 6 Under Garland

The grid is 3-3-4-4-5-5, but reels 5 and 6 start locked, leaving 144 ways. One Star opens reel 5, a second opens reel 6, and the count can reach 614,656. In Spirit Spins, the board flips to 5-5-4-4-3-3 with every reel open.

What Changed From Remember Gulag

The reels, the xMechanics, and the pay table didn’t move. The numbers did. The cap fell from 30,000x to 12,250x, while the odds of reaching it went from 1 in 17,000,000 to 1 in 2,400,000. Propaganda Bet cost 1.2x and returned 96.52%; Wish Upon A Star costs 1.5x, returns 96.22%, and still forces reel 5 open. Gulag Spins and Double Vodka became Spirit Spins and Double Joy, while All Aboard kept its name. The headline RTP edged from 96.08% to 96.10%, and while Remember Gulag’s buys came as a range, Nolimit City itemises four for this version, with Spirit Spins at 60x, All Aboard at 270x, Double Joy at 486x, and Lucky Draw at 187.2x.

Paytable

These columns are Remember Gulag’s, cell for cell. Santa pays 6x for six and 0.75x for three, Mrs Claus and the hooded elf share 5x at the six mark, and the three presents stop at 2x.

Symbol 3 4 5 6
Santa 0.75x 1.5x 4x 6x
Mrs Claus 0.5x 1x 3x 5x
Hooded elf 0.45x 0.9x 2x 5x

Blue present 0.15x 0.3x 0.75x 2x
Green present 0.15x 0.3x 0.75x 2x
Red bauble Wild No pay; lands on any reel and fills in for every symbol but the Star
Star Scatter No pay; reels 2 to 6, opens reels 5 and 6, 3 or more start Spirit Spins

Ultimate Slots Verdict

Christmas paint hides a retuned bet. Remember Gulag's board and pay table return unchanged, but the cap is lower and far easier to reach, and Wish Upon A Star raises the return while opening reel 5. Check the setting before you play, since versions at 94.08%, 92.09%, and 87.09% exist beside the standard one. It's a reskin with a reason to exist.

3.8/5 Very Good

✓ What We Like

  • Remember Gulag's locked-reel board survives intact, with reels 5 and 6 opening one Star at a time
  • The cap is far more reachable than the original's
  • Wish Upon A Star raises the return as well as forcing reel 5 open
  • Double Joy doubles the character multipliers from the setup spin onwards

✗ What Could Be Better

  • Nothing on the reels is new if you've played Remember Gulag
  • The maximum is well below the original's
  • Six Santas pay 6x, so the main game leans on xWays and Wilds for anything sizeable

Detailed Review

Gulag Under the Tinsel

It looks like a Christmas card someone left in an ashtray, all grey pencil and sudden red, with a Santa nursing a brandy and elves who’ve clearly found the sherry.

The easy read is that Nolimit City took Remember Gulag, repainted it and shipped it on 5 December 2023. Most of what this review can check backs that up. The locked reels, the xWays, xNudge, and xSplit roles, the booster’s job, and every cell of the pay table belong to the older game. If you’ve played that one, there’s no rule here you haven’t met.

The payout shape is what the label misses. Remember Gulag asked you to chase a number so remote it barely registered. This version keeps the same Spirit Spins build, a setup spin, active characters, and a top reel stacking multipliers that don’t reset, and points it at a maximum much closer to hand. That changes how the bonus feels. A character picked early at a decent multiplier now looks like a path somewhere rather than a lottery.

It still swings hard. The main game pays thin, long runs without a Star are normal, and a setup spin that hands the one active character a small multiplier can make a whole bonus feel like waiting. The game is built to make you lean in on that setup spin, and it works.

Wish Upon A Star is the other quiet strength. Opening reel 5 as well as placing a Star makes the boost easy to understand, and it returns more than playing without it.

If you’re browsing our Christmas slots for something cosy, this isn’t it. The humour is adult and the art is grim on purpose. As free play, though, it’s a clean way to feel how much a lower, closer cap changes a board you may already know.

Frequently Asked Questions

The reels, features and pay table match Remember Gulag's, but the numbers don't. The cap is lower and much easier to reach, the booster costs 1.5x instead of 1.2x and still opens reel 5, and the bonus modes are now Spirit Spins, All Aboard, and Double Joy.
Each boosted round starts with a Star Scatter on reel 2 and reel 5 unlocked, so two more Stars bring Spirit Spins. Symbol pays stay the same, and it can't be used once a bonus mode is running.
The character multiplier values, both in the setup spin and through the bonus. Five Stars start it, and its top reel adds +2x, +4x, or doubles, while the other modes add +1x, +2x, or double.
Four ordinary Wilds. It nudges on reel 3 or 4 until the whole stack shows, gaining one multiplier step per nudge, and two of them on the reels add their multipliers together.
Outside the bonus, the Star becomes an expanding Wild that fills its reel, with no multiplier. After Spirit Spins trigger, Scatters stop splitting.
Yes. Collect three Stars during Spirit Spins in Jingle Balls, and you move up to All Aboard with all four characters active, and every Star also adds a spin.
