Nudge

A nudge moves a reel one position up or down after it stops, shifting whatever was just off-screen into the visible window. It’s a small mechanical intervention with potentially significant consequences. A high-value symbol sitting one step out of a winning combination is suddenly in play, or a near-miss becomes a paid result. The feature has its roots in physical fruit machines, where a nudge was literally a button press that inched the reel forward, but modern video slots have carried the concept forward in more automated and varied forms.

In contemporary implementations, nudges are typically awarded by the game rather than manually triggered by the player. A spin might produce a near-miss condition that the game recognises and responds to with an automatic nudge, shifting the relevant reel to complete a combination. Other games award a set number of nudges that apply to specific reels based on what landed. Some titles use nudges as part of a broader bonus structure, where accumulated nudge awards are applied in sequence across multiple reels to build toward a result. The two games in this library demonstrate how the feature translates into modern design. Bonzo’s Bananza and Fortune Gems 500 both use nudge features as active components of their regular play rather than nostalgic callbacks.

Can I choose which reel to nudge or is it automatic?

It depends on the game. Some implementations award player-controlled nudges where you select which reel to move and in which direction, giving genuine input into the outcome. Others are fully automatic, with the game deciding where and when to apply the nudge based on the current reel state. The games in this library use automatic nudges rather than player-directed ones, so the feature fires in response to reel conditions rather than player choice.

Does a nudge always move a reel toward a win?

In modern automated implementations, generally yes. When a game awards a nudge automatically, it typically does so because the reel state warrants it. A valuable symbol is one position away from contributing to a combination. In player-controlled versions the outcome depends on the choice made, and a poorly directed nudge can produce nothing. The automatic nudge removes that uncertainty by applying the movement only when the game’s logic determines it improves the result.
