Demo Overview

Two realms. Two bonus games. One fire giant who looks like he’s having a very bad century. Hacksaw Gaming built Stormforged around the Norse mythology clash between Muspelheim’s scorching fire giants and Midgard’s ice-hardened Vikings, and unlike most Norse slots that borrow the aesthetic without committing to it, this one actually earns its setting.

The grid sits framed by cracked lava stone with Surtur brooding on one side, the reel symbols are detailed and thematic right down to the blood-spattered crossed axes, and the atmosphere builds before a single spin. It’s visually one of Hacksaw’s most ambitious productions, and the dual-bonus structure gives the game genuine mechanical depth to match.

Feature Breakdown

Portals to Muspelheim (Base Game Feature)

The Hand of Surtur is a scatter symbol that rips downward through the reel it lands on, carving out a Portal to Muspelheim at the bottom. Portals act as wilds and substitute for all paying symbols. The Hand only activates if the Portal it creates would contribute to at least one winning combination.

When the Hand of Surtur tears through a Wild symbol on its path down, the Portal gains a random multiplier applied to any winning lines passing through it. Possible multiplier values are 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, and 200x. If multiple winning lines pass through multiplier Portals, the multipliers are added together before being applied to the win. The Hand can also tear through a Treasure Chest symbol, shattering it to award an instant cash prize worth 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 75x, 100x, 150x, 200x, 250x, 500x, 750x, 1,000x, 1,500x, 2,000x, or 2,500x your bet. If the Hand passes through both a Wild and a Treasure Chest simultaneously, the multiplier from the Wild also applies to the chest prize.

Surtur’s Vengeance Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, or 5 Surtur scatter symbols in standard play triggers 10, 12, or 14 free spins respectively. The round moves to the fiery realm of Muspelheim, where the reels take on a deep crimson tone and Surtur looms at the side.

The first Wild symbol to land on each reel during the bonus becomes sticky and remains in place until the round ends. Any Wilds already on the reels when the bonus triggers carry over as sticky Wilds immediately. Only one sticky Wild can occupy each reel at any time. Once locked, no further Wilds will appear on that reel.

The Frost Sword scatter remains active during this bonus and can still trigger Portals when it appears, slicing down and creating additional multiplier or cash prize opportunities. Landing 2, 3, 4, or 5 Surtur scatters during free spins awards 2, 4, 6, or 8 additional spins, respectively.

Warriors of the Storm Free Spins

Landing 3, 4, or 5 Viking scatter symbols triggers 10, 12, or 14 free spins in the icy realm of Midgard. The key feature here is the Storm Reel, created when the Hammer of Thor scatter symbol lands during the bonus. The reel it lands on becomes a Storm Reel that persists until the end of the round. On each spin, every Storm Reel reveals either a Viking Warrior or fills with a raging Storm. A Storm fills the reel with wilds for that spin only, then moves one step left at the start of the next spin, potentially pushing other Storm Reels with it.

When a Storm Reel reveals a Warrior instead, that Warrior carries a multiplier applied to any winning lines passing through the reel. Three different Warriors can appear with different multiplier ranges. The Rogue carries 2x, 3x, 4x, or 5x. The Shieldmaiden runs at 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, or 10x. The Berserker is the highest tier, with multipliers scaling up to 200x. As with Portals, multipliers from multiple Storm Reels in the same winning line are added before being applied. Retriggers follow the same 2/4/6/8 spin award structure as Surtur’s Vengeance.

How to Play

Demo Mode Info

Stormforged plays on a 5-reel, 4-row grid with 14 fixed paylines. Winning combinations form when three or more matching symbols land from left to right starting on the leftmost reel. Bets run from €0.10 to €75 per spin; feature buys can exceed this limit. Wild symbols substitute for all paying symbols but cannot appear on the top row of the reels. The Hand of Surtur, Frost Sword, and the blue runic Wild all substitute for all symbols in the paytable. Only the highest win per payline is paid each round.

The game's hit rate sits at approximately 24%, meaning roughly one in every four spins produces some kind of return. Given the high volatility profile, most of those hits will be modest. The game is designed around infrequent, high-impact bonus sequences rather than sustained small returns.

Symbol Payouts

Values below are shown as stake multipliers at a €1 bet across all 14 paylines. The Treasure Chest and Frost Sword scatter are special symbols; their coin values are shown but their primary function is the cash prize and Portal trigger respectively.

Ultimate Slots Verdict

Stormforged is one of Hacksaw Gaming's most fully realised releases. The dual-bonus structure gives the game two genuine personalities: the sticky wild accumulation tension of Surtur's Vengeance versus the Storm Reel multiplier chaos of Warriors of the Storm. The Portal system keeps standard play interesting in ways that most high-volatility slots can't manage. Against that, it's genuinely punishing on the bankroll between features, and the 100x Surtur's Vengeance buy is a reminder that buying the bonus doesn't guarantee the bonus delivers. The variance profile is real. But the upside, when everything connects, is a slot that earns the 12,500x ceiling on its own terms.

✓ What We Like

  • Two distinct free spins modes with meaningfully different feature sets. Not just the same round with a reskin.
  • Portal multipliers up to 200x keep standard play from feeling like dead time between bonuses.
  • Hacksaw's production quality at its peak. Detail on every symbol, atmosphere that builds before the first spin.
  • Six bonus buy options provide genuine flexibility across volatility preferences and bankroll levels.

✗ What Could Be Better

  • Standard play is sparse. Long stretches without meaningful returns are common, and a 24% hit rate means plenty of dead spins.
  • High-cost bonus buys (100x to 200x) carry real downside risk, as our Surtur's Vengeance session demonstrated.
  • Hacksaw's signature win bleep sound effect feels jarring against the otherwise immersive audio design.
  • Lower RTP variants circulate at some operators. The in-game panel is the only reliable way to verify which version is running.

Detailed Review

Demo Play Notes

The atmosphere lands immediately. Before a spin has been made, Surtur is already glowering from the left of the reels, the Viking snowfields fill the background, and the soundtrack builds a slow tension that’s genuinely effective. Hacksaw put real production weight into this one. The crossed sword symbols with their blood-spatter detail, the wolf with the ember-red eyes, the way the reels transform entirely when you enter either bonus mode. It’s the kind of slot you’d load up just to sit in for a moment before spinning.

Standard play opened with the familiar Hacksaw pattern. Measured, controlled, occasionally rewarding. Portal triggers happened in the regular game a few times, each time the Hand of Surtur ripping down a reel with good dramatic effect. When a Portal lands without a Wild or Chest in its path it’s simply a line-completing wild, which is fine but doesn’t move the needle. When it finds a multiplier, that’s where the room changes. The potential for stacked multipliers across multiple Portal wilds in the same spin is one of the more genuinely tense moments the standard game can produce.

The 100x Surtur’s Vengeance buy produced the hellish result the play notes describe. Ten spins, a few sticky Wilds locking in on lower-value reels, a total return of roughly 11x on a 100x outlay. That’s not a reflection of the feature’s capability. It’s a demonstration of how wide the variance band runs on a bonus round built around both the sticky Wild count and the Portal multipliers those Wilds enable. A clean Surtur’s Vengeance with Wilds locking across all five reels and a high-multiplier Portal or two can produce dramatically different results. The same trigger, wildly different outcomes.

Warriors of the Storm is the more visually spectacular of the two bonuses. Storm Reels shifting left across the grid, each potentially revealing multiplier Warriors at increasing power tiers, creates a building sequence that rewards patience across the spins. The Berserker multiplier, which scales into triple-digit territory, hitting a Storm Reel in the right position is where the game’s top end becomes plausible. In a session run this is the feature you’re hoping the scatters land in.

It’s worth mentioning what Hacksaw have achieved thematically here. Most Norse slots reach for Odin, Thor, and Valhalla as the obvious reference points. Stormforged goes deeper — Surtur, Muspelheim, Midgard — and builds a genuine clash between fire and ice as both narrative and structural logic. The two bonus realms don’t just look different, they play differently. That’s a harder thing to achieve than it sounds, and it’s one of the reasons this slot holds up better on repeat play than most of its genre peers.

Walking away from the session still liking the game despite a losing bonus run is probably the best endorsement a high-volatility slot can get. When the design, atmosphere, and feature architecture are all doing their jobs properly, the variance becomes part of what makes it interesting rather than a frustration. Stormforged earns that feeling more consistently than most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Surtur's Fury costs 200x your bet versus 100x for the standard Surtur's Vengeance. The key difference is that Surtur's Fury guarantees a minimum of 12 free spins and at least 1 sticky Wild already locked in at the start of the round. The standard Surtur's Vengeance buy gives you 10 free spins with no starting Wild guarantee. Wilds only become sticky once they naturally land during the spins. The Fury buy in Stormforged is essentially a premium version of the same bonus with a better starting position.
Yes. The Frost Sword scatter (which triggers Portals to Midgard during Surtur's Vengeance) remains active during free spins. When it lands, it slices down its reel and creates a Portal, which can still hit Wilds or Treasure Chests in its path and apply multipliers. This means the Surtur's Vengeance bonus has a layered structure: sticky Wilds building across reels while Portal multipliers can still fire on any spin.
When a winning payline passes through multiple Storm Reels in Warriors of the Storm, the multiplier values from each Warrior revealed on those reels are added together first, then applied as a single combined multiplier to the win. A line passing through a Shieldmaiden (8x) and a Berserker (say, 50x) would apply 58x to that winning combination. This additive rather than multiplicative structure is an important distinction for understanding how the bonus scales.
In Stormforged, the Hand of Surtur only activates and creates a Portal if the resulting Portal position would be part of or create at least one winning combination. If no winning line would pass through the Portal, the Hand lands without triggering. The same activation condition applies to the Frost Sword scatter in the bonus round. This is why you can occasionally see these symbols land without the Portal sequence playing out.
In Stormforged, if a Storm Reel filled with a raging Storm tries to shift one position left at the start of the next free spin but there is no empty space available to move into, the reel stays in its current position. This prevents infinite leftward progression and means that multiple Storm Reels can eventually pile up at the left side of the grid. Running the free play demo is a good way to observe how Storm Reel movement behaves across a full bonus round.
No. Sticky Wilds accumulated during Stormforged's Surtur's Vengeance remain locked in position when the bonus retriggers. They carry through into the additional spins. This makes retriggers significantly more valuable later in the round, when Wilds may already be locking across multiple reels. A retrigger with four or five Wilds already in place creates a very different set of conditions to one triggered at the beginning of the feature.
