Remember Gulag Demo Slot

Remember Gulag started life as Vacation in Gulag. Nolimit City changed the name after a backlash and the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, then released the slot on 19 April 2022 with that month’s proceeds pledged to Ukraine, on top of an earlier donation. Co-founder Jonas Tegman defended it as “an anti war slot game”.

Most talk about the game stops at the name. The demo is more interesting than the argument. Two of its six reels start the spin wrapped in barbed wire, and only Scatters can cut them free. Among our prison-themed slots, few are bleaker, and it is drawn in grey over a snowbound camp.

Game Features

The xWays Symbol

In the main game, xWays lands on reels 1 and 2. It reveals a regular symbol and grows to 2 or 3 copies of it, so that reel adds ways. When two land together, both show the same symbol. An xSplit that hits an xWays doubles its multiplier, and every further split doubles it again.

The xNudge Wild

Reels 3 and 4 get the xNudge Wild, in regular play and in the bonus. It lands as a stack and slides up or down until it fills the reel, and its multiplier goes up by 1 with each step. Two xNudge Wilds on one win add their multipliers together. If an xSplit meets an xNudge Wild, that reel gains one more Wild.

xSplit and the Scatter

xSplit Wilds land on reels 5 and 6, so they only reach the board after a Scatter has opened one of those reels. An xSplit halves the symbols to its left and right on its row and doubles each of them; a symbol split more than once shows a multiplier. Once it has landed, the xSplit becomes two regular Wilds, and another xSplit can split those too.

The rule that matters most covers a Scatter. On a main-game spin that does not trigger Gulag Spins, an xSplit that hits a Scatter turns it into a Wild covering the whole reel. A Scatter that falls short of the bonus can still pay its way.

What Propaganda Bet Costs

Propaganda Bet is the game’s xBet. It costs 1.2x the normal bet, places a Scatter on reel 2, and leaves reel 5 open for each spin, meaning the board starts at 720 ways. The game warns that regular spins get harsher and pay less under it, and what it buys is a better shot at Gulag Spins. The return also rises, to 96.52%.

Another Nolimit Prison

The studio went back behind bars in 2024 with San Quentin 2: Death Row, a far bigger swing with a 200,000x maximum. Remember Gulag is the older, smaller, and stranger design. Its appeal is the shape of the board, which changes with every Scatter.

Gulag Spins

The Setup Spin

Three or more Scatters trigger Gulag Spins, which land 1 in 211 spins on average. Before the round starts, a setup spin decides how many spins you get and the win multiplier for each of the four characters: the moustached officer, the general, the prisoner in goggles, and the old man. With exactly 3 Scatters, the game picks one of them at random, and only that character uses its multiplier.

Three Scatter Tiers

Four Scatters give the All Aboard version, with all four characters active. Five give Double Vodka, which doubles every multiplier value from the setup spin onward. Each extra Scatter during the bonus adds 1 spin. Collect 3 Scatters in a standard round, and all four characters switch on, the same as All Aboard.

Top Reel Multipliers

In the bonus, a top reel feeds the active characters. It adds +1x or +2x to a character’s multiplier or doubles it, and Double Vodka raises those steps to +2x and +4x. Each increase stays with its character until the final spin of the bonus. If a round’s total win passes 30,000x, the game stops it and pays that amount, under the name Oligarch Status: Achieved.
