Rotten Demo Overview

Fog rolls across a dead fairground, a lit Love Ride sign hangs over a ride on the left, and a figure drags its feet past the café below the Ferris wheel. A blood-smeared envelope opens this Rotten demo, so you’d expect the slot behind it to show no mercy. Then, a Switch scatter lands, and suddenly you’re being handed its best symbol, or wilds. For a few respins, the letters and lesser zombies on its list turn into the red-haired clown or into wilds, and the grim board you were staring at starts working for you.
The postmark on that envelope reads DEC 22 2022, the day Hacksaw put the game out, and it’s addressed to Outbreak Area 032 and a research facility. The fairground stays in the fog behind a 6×5 board of weathered wooden slats, the ranks are painted on it in cracked yellow, and the premiums are five zombie portraits: a stitched head lit red, a yellow-eyed woman, a police officer still in his cap, a gas-mask wearer, and that clown.
SwitchSpins
Respins by List

A Switch scatter starts a set of SwitchSpins, anywhere from 1 to 10 respins. Each set comes with a list of selected symbols, and while the set runs, every symbol on that list is replaced, either by the clown or by wilds. You don’t pick the list or the replacement; the game does, and you watch it happen.
Land another Switch while the set is running, and the list grows and more respins are added. A short list of card ranks changes little. A list that has caught the gas-mask and police zombies is a different story, because each of those portraits that lands becomes the top payer or a wild, and lines that would have paid small start paying properly.
When the set ends, the list clears, and the next Switch starts from nothing. If a bonus triggers partway through, it waits its turn; the SwitchSpins finish, then the free spins begin.
Free Spins
Mad Scientist
Three Mad Scientist scatters open a 10-spin bonus from regular play, one that lands a Switch more often than the base game does. The list still clears after every set here, so each SwitchSpins run starts from scratch. What makes this bonus interesting is the exit. Three Total Takeover scatters during Mad Scientist move play to Total Takeover once that spin is over, with a fresh count of 10 spins, so a bonus that’s down to its last couple of spins can start again as the stronger one. Outside that exit, it plays like regular spins with more Switches in them.
Total Takeover
Three Total Takeover scatters trigger it, either in regular play or during Mad Scientist, and it gives 10 free spins in which a Switch also comes more often than in regular play. The difference is that nothing gets forgotten. Symbols picked for replacement stay picked when a set ends, so each new Switch adds to a list that only ever grows.
Once the list holds every symbol, a SwitchSpins set fills the whole 6×5 grid with clowns or with wilds. Three more of its own scatters during the bonus add 4 spins, which gives the list more time to fill. A slow start costs you nothing permanent here, since a set that adds one symbol still leaves it on the list until the bonus ends.
Buy Options

Start with the 20x setting, since it’s the one aimed at the respins. Switch FeatureSpins costs 20x a spin, lands a Switch symbol each spin, and has the menu’s lowest RTP at 96.16%. BonusHunt asks for three times the bet on every spin in return for a fivefold bonus chance. The two bonuses are sold outright, Mad Scientist at 110x and Total Takeover at 250x.
How to Play
The Symbol Strip
The strip above the grid lists the nine paying symbols below the clown and lights the ones a SwitchSpins set will replace, while the panel at its top right shows what replaces them, the clown or a wild, and how many respins are left. Wins come on 35 lines, paying for 3 to 6 symbols from the opening reel, and the zombie-hand Wild matches any paying symbol, paying 50x for six.
The table below shows why the list matters. Swap a police zombie for the clown, and a three-symbol line goes from paying 1.5x to paying 5x. The Wild’s own pay is six-only, so on most lines its job is to finish a win for something else.
That strip is the thing to read in free play. During regular spins, it stays dark until a Switch lights part of it for a few respins, and then it goes dark again. When a second Switch lands mid-set, more of the strip lights up and the respin count climbs, so you can see a set getting better while it’s running. A set that lights only card ranks is one you can mostly ignore; the sets to watch light a portrait or two.
Total Takeover changes what the strip means. Lit symbols stay lit from one set to the next, so the strip turns into a progress bar for the whole bonus, and what you’re tracking is how much of it is dark. Mad Scientist never gets that far, because its list clears between sets.
The Switch scatter works alone. One is enough to start respins in regular play or in either bonus, while the Mad Scientist and Total Takeover scatters need three at once.
Stake Range
Rotten lets the bet climb no higher than €100 and fall no lower than €0.10. The RTP is 96.27%. A smaller bet lets a free-play session cover more spins.
Game Paytable

None of the three scatters pays anything; each one opens a different feature instead.
Ultimate Slots Verdict
Next to the sticky wilds of Wanted Dead or a Wild, Rotten's kept list is the fresher idea, and it's the reason to play. Regular spins are thin, but SwitchSpins and Total Takeover repay the wait, and the fairground is a grim, well-drawn place to wait in.
✓ What We Like
- SwitchSpins rewrite the grid toward the clown or wilds, a respin feature of Rotten's own.
- Total Takeover keeps its list from set to set, so the bonus grows stronger the longer it lasts.
- Three Total Takeover scatters during Mad Scientist move play into the stronger bonus with a fresh count of 10 spins.
- The fog-bound fairground, the postmarked envelope, and five distinct zombie portraits make the setting feel designed rather than decorated.
✗ What Could Be Better
- Between Switches, the table is thin, and only the clown pays much for three of a kind.
- Mad Scientist clears its list after every set, so the cheaper bonus never gets the kept list that makes Total Takeover special.
Detailed Review
A Fairground Takeover
In Wanted Dead or a Wild’s Great Train Robbery, every wild that lands stays where it is until the 10 free spins are over. Total Takeover keeps something else, a list of symbols, and that choice gives Rotten its character, which is why it anchors this review. A sticky wild helps the one cell it lands on. A kept list reaches every position where a listed symbol lands, on every respin of every later set, so the bonus grows stronger the longer it lasts even though the reels themselves spin fresh each time.
Getting there is the hard part, and regular play asks a lot of you. Below the clown, the table is thin, with the letters and the 10 paying small change for three, while the other four portraits pay 1x to 2x. The 10,000x maximum is reachable in regular play as well as in both bonuses, but a set that lists nothing but card ranks does next to nothing, and a set can be a single respin. The strip lighting one symbol, then going dark again, is the main frustration.
The respins aren’t locked behind a bonus, though, and that keeps regular play from going dead. A Switch can land on any spin, and a list that has caught the gas-mask and police zombies turns the middle of the table into the clown, the one symbol that pays 5x for three. Wild sets work another way. The wilds finish lines for the premiums that stayed off the list, so a wild set lifts the police and gas-mask zombies instead of replacing them. Mad Scientist gives you more of those sets, but it clears the list after each one, which makes it the weaker of the two bonuses, and its best use is the chance of three Total Takeover scatters sending you across. Meanwhile, the clown is having a far better time than anyone else at this fair.
If Total Takeover’s list ever holds every symbol, every cell on the grid shows the clown or a wild.
So, here’s a challenge to finish on. Open the demo, wait out the grey stretches, and see how far along the strip you can get in one Total Takeover before the spins run out. A full list needs Switch after Switch, and every set that adds a portrait counts, but Rotten is at its best when you’re one symbol short with spins left to play.
