Folsom Prison Demo Overview
Sixteen ways. Eight live positions on a five-reel board, and the fifth reel shut behind bars before the first spin resolves. Folsom Prison pays 2.5x for five of its best inmate and sets its maximum payout at 75,000x, and everything between those two figures is cell space. An xWays, an xSplit, a Scatter, or a walking Cockroach unlocks the positions above and below wherever it lands, and the frame grows from 2-2-2-2-0 rows to 4-6-6-6-4 and 3,456 ways. Nolimit City put this slot out in June 2022, and it is still the most closed board the studio has drawn.
No sequel followed it. The studio’s other prison line runs through San Quentin 2: Death Row, its current entry.
Gameplay Options
Locked Cells and xWays
The active area at the start is the middle two rows on reels 1 to 4. Every other square on the board is a locked cell, drawn as a barred door so you can read the state of the round at a glance.
When a Wild, a Scatter, an xSplit, or an xWays lands on an open position, it unlocks the nearest locked cells above and below it on that reel.
xWays does two jobs on the same landing. It turns into one ordinary paying symbol and reveals 2 to 4 copies of it, and it opens a cell on either side, so the reel gets taller and the ways counter climbs with it.
xSplit on the Middle Rows
xSplit lands only on the central two rows of reels 2 to 5. It splits the entire row it arrives on, doubling the ways available to paying symbols, and it splits itself into two Wilds. A Scatter caught by a split awards an extra spin when the bonus triggers, and it opens further locked cells on the way. A Cockroach Nest caught by one gains a multiplier level.
The Cockroach and the Nest

The Cockroach is the walking multiplier. It takes a starting position, that square becomes a Wild, and the Cockroach then walks above the reels, adding its multiplier to any symbol it passes. Two Cockroaches that occupy the same square on the same step turn it Wild.
Within the two bonus modes, the reels can also land a Cockroach Nest, which does nothing at all until a Cockroach walks onto it and then raises that Cockroach one level for the rest of the feature. The levels are 1, 2, 3, and 10, and three upgrades are the limit. A Nest holding two eggs upgrades its Cockroach and clones it, once per mode.
Two Scatters
Scatters keep to the middle two rows of reels 2 to 5 outside the bonus. A pair of them opens the middle two rows on reel 5, then converts into an xWays, an xSplit, a Wild, or a Cockroach Nest, so two Scatters that miss the trigger still leave the board wider than they found it.
Walk The Line
Three Scatters start Walk The Line at 8 spins or more, with any Scatter split by an xSplit adding one to the count. Each spin opens the centre 2-4-4-4-2 rows and puts at least one Cockroach on the board. Reel 5 is the only reel that can land a Scatter in this mode, and one that does adds 2 spins, 3 if it splits, and upgrades every remaining spin into a The Chair spin. Multipliers already earned come with it.
The Chair
Four Scatters go straight to The Chair, again from 8 spins, again with an extra spin for every split Scatter. The centre 4-4-4-4-4 rows open on every spin and three Cockroaches are guaranteed, which stacks multipliers faster than anything Walk The Line can arrange. This is the mode built to reach Meet Your Maker, the 75,000x maximum payout. A round that gets that far stops and pays it out.
The Toast Bet
The Toast Bet is this game’s xBet. It adds 20% to the stake, 1.2x in total, and in exchange a Scatter is planted on the second reel every spin. Symbol values stay exactly where they are, and the return while the lever is down is 96.03%.
How to Play
Opening the Cells
Eight squares are live when the demo first stops its reels, two rows each on the first four reels, with reel 5 not open at all. That is the 2-2-2-2-0 setup, and 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 is where the 16 on the ways counter comes from.
The board grows one way only, by special symbols landing on open ground and unlocking the nearest cells above and below them, and a full frame of 4-6-6-6-4 rows counts 3,456 ways. Nothing else among the site’s prison slots starts this closed. Wins build from reel 1 across neighbouring reels, and the more ways a symbol completes, the more times its value is paid. The spacebar spins if you would rather not reach for the button.
Stake Levels and Return
Spins are priced between €0.20 and €100. The RTP on the standard setting is 96.07%, and one lower setting exists as well. Both are in the table, along with what the Toast Bet does to that figure.
| Setting | Return |
|---|---|
| Standard | 96.07% |
| Lower alternative setting | 94.01% |
| Toast Bet active | 96.03% |
22.62% of spins pay something, and on a board that opens at 16 ways most of those pays are a fraction of a stake. Extreme is the word on the splash badge, and High is where this review places the game on our volatility scale, which is our top tier. Both readings describe the same behaviour: long flat runs while the cells stay shut, then a mode that opens the frame and hands the Cockroach multipliers something worth walking over.
Folsom Prison Paytable
Five inmates over five card ranks, and the whole ladder is compressed. The best inmate pays 2.5x for five across the ways, the weakest rank 0.1x for three, and the distance between them is under 2.5x. Both Wild symbols, the Scatter, xWays, and xSplit have no row of their own.

Ultimate Slots Verdict
A 2.5x top pay under a 75,000x cap should read as a warning, and on most boards it would. Here, the distance between the two is the design. Folsom Prison spends its whole round unlocking itself, and the Cockroach multipliers appear at exactly the moment the frame is finally wide enough to make proper use of them.
✓ What We Like
- The locked frame turns reel expansion into the main event, 16 ways growing to 3,456
- Cockroach multipliers at levels 1, 2, 3, and 10 survive a Walk The Line upgrade into The Chair
- Two Wild symbols plus xWays, xSplit, and the Scatter all open cells, so most landings change the shape of the board
✗ What Could Be Better
- 2.5x for five of the top inmate means standard play returns fractions until the cells open
- The Chair wants four Scatters from a frame where Scatters use two rows on four reels
- Reel 5 never opens on its own, so it takes a Scatter pair or a bonus mode to wake it
Detailed Review
How it Compares
The Cockroach decides this game. It lands, the square under it turns Wild, and from there the insect walks above the reels on its own schedule, dropping its multiplier onto whatever it crosses. Levels 1, 2, 3, and 10 are the entire ladder, and the step from 3 to 10 is the one that reshapes a round, because a single upgrade can more than triple a win already built on split rows. Three upgrades per mode, no more.
Everything else on this board exists to open it, which is an unusual way to design a slot. Most ways games start wide and let multipliers do the growing. Folsom Prison starts at 16 ways with reel 5 behind bars and makes the growth itself the reward, so an xWays dropping onto reel 3 is worth watching before it resolves. The reveal, the two cells it unlocks, and the ways it adds all land before a single symbol is paid.
The case for scepticism is standard play. 2.5x for five of the best inmate, on 16 ways, is close to nothing, and The Chair, the mode with a real route to the cap, asks for four Scatters from a frame with one reel shut and Scatters confined to two rows. The studio’s own figures for buying in run from 68x for Walk The Line to 1,500x for The Chair, with a draw between them at 82x, 355x, and 784x weighting the odds towards one mode or the other, which is a fair guide to how differently the studio values the two.
Walk The Line answers part of that objection. Three Scatters are a realistic ask, the mode guarantees a Cockroach on every spin, and a single Scatter on reel 5 pulls the round up into The Chair with the multiplier levels intact. The two modes are not separate destinations so much as two points on one route, and that design decision does more for the game than any number on the pay table.
The artwork holds up too. Five inmate portraits in sepia, a barred door drawn on every locked square so the board narrates its own progress, and a cockroach given more care than most studios spend on a premium symbol. Cell doors that vanish one pair at a time are a better progress meter than any bar the studio could have bolted on.
Four years on, this is still the cleanest version of the cell-opening idea, and watching 16 ways turn into 3,456 costs nothing in the demo. Nolimit City has built bigger caps since 2022. It has not built another board where the opening is the feature.
